Abstract (EN)
On 18 May 2025, the process for the election of the fifth President of the Romanian Republic concluded with the victory of Nicușor Dan. This outcome is the result of a complex chain of events set in motion by a ruling of the Romanian Constitutional Court annulling the elections. By analytically retracing these developments, this contribution reflects on the legitimacy of such far-reaching interventions by Constitutional Courts, while also offering a critical perspective on the rise of anti-system movements and actors that contribute to the destabilization of the foundations of liberal democratic orders.
